(1) 15 mins: Questions from OLI page 12 and discussion on Industry Scenarios.
(2) 15 mins: In-class activity: Recap. First, You made a Masdar scenario in Week 1, then self-critiqued it “Cascio Style” on Session 3, and discussed it with a colleague as well.
So the in-class activity today is to:
Redesign scenarios that expand on the features that Jamais describes as bad scenarios, then to make a new set of scenarios that illustrate multiple dimensions e.g., technology, gender role, human-nature etc. Please upload to your online scenarios.
(3) Homework (a) weekly reflection and (b) OLI page 14 “Why do people make bad scenarios?” before next class on Day 5.
(4) Recap: Today we discussed several famous industry scenarios about the future of computing. You applied Jamais Cascio’s critiques to industry scenarios and realized that there are some key differences between an industry scenario proposing a technologically driven vision of the world and broader scenarios that meet Cascio’s critiques. Hopefully, this experience will help you ask yourself the question “What kind of scenario am I reading/making and what type of critiques should I consider to inform this scenario?” Next, you will begin to answer the question: “why are we constantly surprised by the future?”
